SHEFFIELD 1982 - Steelworks, Nightclubs and New Romantics

Miner strikes, a collapsing coal and steel industry, and the battle between Arthur Scargill and Margaret Thatcher were the perfect backdrop for an amazing music scene in Sheffield in the early eighties - we had Pulp, Human League, Heaven Seventeen, ABC, Cabaret Voltaire, Chakk and the Comsat Angels all developing their sound and Penny's Nightclub was the place where we all went at night, everyone in their own corner, eyeing each other up before getting down together on the dance floor.
This Ai video is part real, part fantasy, made from all the images I had lying around from that era, bringing back such great memories and the mix of Brutalist architecture, industrial noise and experimental sounds was what kept us all going through thick and thin!
